McLean is located in Fairfax County, Virginia, nestled on the banks of the Potomac River. Not too far from Washington, DC, McLean is known for being home to many diplomats, members of Congress, members of the military, and other high-ranking government officials. The charming town is often distinguished by its luxury homes and shopping destinations.

This well established community has plenty of home styles to choose from, including ranch, colonial, and contemporary, as well as available apartments and condos. McLean is also known as one of the wealthiest cities in the United States. Historically, McLean is named after the former owner and publisher of The Washington Post, John Roll McLean. The community formed in 1910 when Langley and Lewinsville merged.

Two nearby shopping destinations are considered to be some of the best in the area. One such place is Tysons Corner Center, which is one of the first fully-enclosed, climate-controlled shopping centers in the Washington metropolitan area. With the three anchor stores of Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, and Nordstrom, the mall also includes many well-known stores such as H&M, LL Bean, and Old Navy. The other most popular shopping destination is Tysons Galleria, a three-level super-regional mall owned by Brookfield Properties Retail Group. Tysons Galleria is anchored by Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue and includes many luxury designer brands such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Versace, and Tiffany & Co. Another popular place to shop is Balducci’s, a gourmet food retailer.

If you’re looking for great eating, head out to Aracosia McLean, which serves a menu of Afghan-inspired dishes as well as a robust wine list. Also notable is J. Gilbert's Wood-Fired Steaks & Seafood McLean, a steakhouse serving Angus beef cooked on wood-fired grills and served with sides as well as great seafood options.

Things to Do

When you live in McLean, you will have an outstanding variety of things to do at your fingertips,  whether you want to spend a day out at a park or take in a local event. One such event is the annual Logan Festival of Solo Performance, which hosts live performances by national, award-winning performers for two whole weeks.

To enjoy a day out in nature, try going to Great Falls National Park, a small National Park site that sits on 800 acres along the Potomac River and is home to gorgeous views of the large waterfall system. Another great park in the area is Scott’s Run Nature Preserve, a great place for outdoor recreation and hiking.


In McLean, students are served by the Fairfax County Public Schools district and several private primary and secondary schools. There are also many higher education institutes nearby in Arlington and Washington, DC.
