The Waterfront

DC’s Waterfront area is a newly redeveloped and growing community that is encompasses The Wharf and Navy Yard. These two distinct communities offer spectacular waterfront views, a marine-focused lifestyle, and an energetic ambiance. A mile-long stretch along the Potomac River and complemented by monumental views, The Wharf, reestablished Washington, DC as a waterfront city and destination. Navy Yard is a 42-acre development along the Anacostia River waterfront that was originally an annex of the Washington Navy Yard. Taken together with The Wharf, this area is an incredible place to find waterfront activity, great shopping, and fine dining.

The Waterfront and the surrounding maritime areas are constantly evolving and becoming increasingly popular. With so much to do, The Waterfront has an energetic feel to it, and tons of activities await residents and visitors. People of all ages and backgrounds can find something to enjoy down in the Waterfront.

When looking for great places to dine in the area, there is no shortage of eateries. One popular destination in the area is Del Mar. Located at the Wharf, Del Mar is an upscale dining experience taking place in a Spanish villa setting. At Del Mar, you can enjoy Spanish cuisine alongside beautiful waterfront views. Another great restaurant in the area is Albi, which serves a variety of traditional Arabic cuisine. Yellow the Cafe, owned by the same chef as Albi, is a cafe offering baked goods, specialty drinks, sandwiches, and more.

If you’re looking for great shopping opportunities in the area, try heading out to Steadfast Supply, a specialty gift shop offering local artists’ wares, home decor, and more. Another great shop in the area is Washington Navy Yard Exchange Out Takes, a department store with a variety of clothing, accessories, electronics, and much more. Also available in the area is Willow, a clothing and gift store with items for people of all ages.

There are many great activities in to partake in at The Wharf, and Navy Yard. Whether you want to spend a day on the water, at a local event, or a park, there is plenty to do in the area.

When looking for a fun event, try stopping by The Anthem, a live music venue and part of The Wharf redevelopment of the Waterfront. In addition, to live music, The Anthem also hosts other events such as the Taste of the South Gala. Another great event in the area, DC JazzFest is an annual event around September with live performances and educational opportunities. Nationals Park is also a popular place to go for fun baseball games.

In terms of spaces for activities, The Yards Park, located in Navy Yard, is a large waterfront park with a waterfall, performance space, a walkable boardwalk, and open green spaces. For those that love boating, The Wharf Marina is the perfect place to launch a boat and spend time by the water. The Waterfront Park is a three-and-a-half-acre park with walking paths, bocce courts, play areas, and views of the Washington Channel.

The Waterfront and the surrounding areas are served by the District of Columbia Public Schools district. Several great schools can be found in the area, including Brent Elementary School and Jefferson Middle School Academy, as well as private schools such as Capitol Hill Day School.
